MUSICATION – Music & Education

Seminar #3 – Volunteers, education of employees, local partnerships

From 8th to 10th January 2013

This is the third meeting in the Musication project (after Brussels and Agueda in 2012). During the first two meetings we have mainly focused on getting to know each other and discussing the differences and similarities between legal structure, infrastructure, processes and cultures in our countries, venues and jobs.

In Agueda we already went one step further by brainstorming on possible projects for the future and planning on creating a useful toolkit. During the third meeting in Groningen we want to deepen these project ideas and other already planned subjects in a practical sense by making and discussing project proposals in small groups. This will be a practical Musication seminar with plenty of space for ideas, creativity and possible new and useful partnerships. Goals – Exchange of knowledge – Strengthening of network – Deepening and figuring out possible new projects – Shaping and further developing of existing ideas – Development of toolkit

Subjects:

  • Volunteers / education of employees (technicians, bar, marketing, interns, volunteers, courses) (musicians as volunteers was also mentioned, this is a probably a different subject all together)
  • Local partnerships / local activities / local actors (municipality, music schools, schools, etc.)
  • Developing a toolkit for the Musication website about ‘ambassador methodology’ : educative projects are only successful with certain people (teachers, venue employees, volunteers, etc.) that are enthusiastic and function as sort of an ambassador for the project. We could develop a methodology for successful ambassadorship.

Work methods

We have chosen a practical approach with sessions in small groups of 5 or 6 people in which we will brainstorm about possible projects, previous projects and already generated ideas. After every session we will do a conclusion with the full group.

Creating and working on concrete plans and new project ideas (whether they will be realized or not) will not only lead to fun and “alive” meetings and possible new collaborations, this way of working will create a list of problems, opportunities, differences and experiences that can be used for the composition of the toolkit and the deepening of the above topics. In addition, it is good to see things in practice. Our seminar starts on

Tuesday with a presentation by Jack Pisterswho will explain his AMACK methodology. After that, we will get a tour of one of the biggest venues in Holland, Melkweg, by Erik Backer.

Off course, on Wednesday and Thursday we are in Groningen at one of the most important music conferences in Europe, where you will have the chance to meet many people form the Dutch and European music sector and see many venues and bands throughout Groningen.

Project ideas mentioned in Agueda

Teaching (Education)

  • An online composite tool with 5 musicians from different countries who can make 5 songs together online. After that, they can possibly perform in these 5 countries. First a test version must be developed (Phil Henrion – Liège, Belgium). It would also be fun to include music students to generate more ‘public awareness.
  • Masterclasses (international) for musicians

Public awareness

  • There are many fun and successful educational projects from different countries mentioned by the participants. We want to collect these examples in English on the Musication website so other countries / venues can use it for inspiration.
  • Online Toolkit with the goal to prepare a methodology for successful ambassadorship for educational projects.

Accompanying (= Coaching / band accompaniment)
